Day after dropping bombshell, Sharad Pawar meets people, party workers

A day after Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) president Sharad Pawar announced his decision to step down as the political outfit's chief, he stuck to his daily routine of meeting people including party functionaries in Mumbai on Wednesday.

Pawar (82) on Tuesday dropped a bombshell by saying he is stepping down as chief of the NCP which he founded and helmed since 1999, but not retiring from public life.

The announcement, made at an event, stumped leaders and workers of the 24-year-old party, and many were seen crying and pleading with the Maratha strongman to reconsider his decision.

Senior NCP leader Ajit Pawar later on Tuesday announced that his uncle will need two to three days to "think over" his decision.

An NCP functionary on Wednesday said Sharad Pawar was meeting people, including party workers, as usual at the Yashwantrao Chavan Pratishthan in Mumbai from 10 am to 1 pm.

Notably, Sharad Pawar's surprise announcement on Tuesday came less than a fortnight after the NCP's Lok Sabha member and his daughter Supriya Sule indicated that there will be two "blasts" (political) in 15 days, one in Delhi and another in Maharashtra.

After Sharad Pawar declared that he is quitting as NCP chief, district unit office bearers in some places in the state said they were quitting their posts to demand that he reconsider his decision.

Conveying his message to protesting party workers, Ajit Pawar requested NCP functionaries not to resign from their posts against Pawar senior's surprise decision.

Has Sharad Pawar indicated he might not toe party line, dropped hint on NCP's future?

By Sahil Joshi: In a politically volatile situation, when the situation is in a flux, we all tend to read between the lines. And then there are lines that drop enough hints. This could be the one by Sharad Pawar.

Sharad Pawar resigned as president of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) on May 2, sending shockwaves across the country. He made the announcement while giving a speech at the Yashwantrao Chavan Foundation in Mumbai.

Supporters wailed and political pundits put their thinking caps on.

In what could be one of the most important messages conveyed in his speech, Sharad Pawar indicated that he might not toe the party line while serving as a Rajya Sabha member.

"I have three years left of Rajya Sabha membership in Parliament, during which I will focus on issues related to Maharashtra and India, with a caveat of not taking any responsibility," said Pawar. He said his resignation does not mean that he is stepping down from public life.

And a line was also added in his speech, leaving scope for the veteran Maharashtra politician to express disagreement with the party he founded over two decades ago.

Pawar's resignation came after 13 days of NCP leader and daughter Supriya Sule saying that there would be two political earthquakes in 15 days.

His resignation as the party chief had come amid rumours of Ajit Pawar joining hands with the BJP. Now, Sharad's speech could give us a possible hint on the NCP's future. Days before Sharad Pawar's resignation, sources told India Today that almost 34 out of 53 Opposition MLAs had internally supported Ajit Pawar's intention to join hands with the BJP and be part of the BJP-Sena government in Maharashtra.

The MLAs were keen on joining the coalition as it might give them relief from central agencies as many Opposition leaders, including Ajit Pawar and his family, Praful Patel, and Hasan Mushreef, are facing Enforcement Directorate heat, the sources said.

Now, there is talk that Sharad Pawar has been unhappy with the way party leaders have been increasing the pressure to align with the BJP to avoid action against them by central agencies.

Sources told India Today that the line in Sharad Pawar's speech where he said that he would focus on issues "with a caveat of not taking any responsibility" was included so he could express his disagreement if the NCP joined hands with the BJP.

Sharad Pawar calls out Uddhav Thackeray's poor administrative capabilities and inability to quell party rebellion

Sharad Pawar has usually been seen as someone who has mentored and guided Uddhav Thackeray from the time the Shiv Sena joined the MVA after ditching its alliance with the BJP. However, in his book that was released on May 2, Pawar has severely criticised Uddhav on several counts. Pawar says that Uddhav showed political immaturity while leading the government as well as when he was faced with rebellion within the Shiv Sena. Pawar says that as CM, he showed up in Mantralaya only twice a week, and even senior leaders had to take appointments to meet the CM - and even those appointments were subject to the appointment Uddhav had with his doctors. Pawar also blamed Uddhav for throwing in the towel too early when faced with the rebellion.
